INTRODUCTION TO ISLAMIC ART - CRASH COURSE

Course Description:

This two-session course is designed as a very brief introduction to the main aspects of historical Islamic art. The first session will introduce students to the definition of ‘Islamic Art’ before providing a brief overview of its development with regards to art and architecture - from its roots in the 1st / 7th century to the 13th / 19th century. The second session, held within the art galleries at the Sharjah Museum of Islamic Civilization, will focus on a close-up discussion of key objects and artefacts in view of examining the main principles of Islamic art. A particular focus will be placed on the importance of calligraphy and its crucial link to the materialization of the Holy Qur’an, geometric decoration, the significance of floral motifs and the issue of animal and human figures.

Entry requirements

Good level of English language (no translation will be provided).
Previous art related experience or education is not required.

Day 1, Friday 25th November, 11.00 - 16.00 (4 hours + 2*30 minutes breaks)
Day 2, Saturday, 26th November, 12.00 - 18.00 (4 hours + transfer. This lecture will happen in Sharjah Museums. The round transportation will be provided from Dubai for no extra cost).
